News Article

MTG in collaboration with TackleAfrica designed a new approach aimed at reaching girls with Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) information known as the Canvas Finger Football Pitch. The finger football concept was introduced as a result of the on and off restrictions on sports brought by the covid -19 pandemic.  The game can be played indoors or outdoors and will serve as an alternative way of reaching girls with SRH information during the rainy seasons when the fields are not accessible.

How to play the game:

Drill 1: Penalty Shoot Out

‘It’s Your Choice’

(Topic- CONTRACEPTION)

ORGANISATION

1. Set up two goals, one at each end (black cones)

2. Place a cone in the middle

3. Form two teams, with a goalkeeper at each end

4. Rest of the team line up

STEP 1: INTRODUCE FOOTBALL DRILL AND TOPIC

1. Each team alternates taking a penalty kick with their

cone trying to score, starting from middle cone

2. Goalkeepers do not move during the shot

3. If no goal, the goal remains the same

4. If a goal is scored, the goal is widened

5. Teams have 5 penalties each. who scores most: wins!

6. If teams are level after 5, it goes to “instant knockout” - 1 penalty each, until someone misses

STEP 2: COACH THE FOOTBALL DRILL (GREEN)

STEP 3: DEBRIEF COACHING POINTS

INTRODUCE SRHR REPRESENTATION

1. If a goal is scored, the attacker must name a contraception method before the goal is widened

2. Goal widening = using that contraception method correctly

3. Scoring 5 penalties = finding the right methods for you, and using them correctly and consistently

4. To make it harder, you cannot repeat a method

STEP 4: PLAY AGAIN, ADD THE SRHR MESSAGE

STEP 5: RECAP FOOTBALL, SRHR REPRESENTATION

DISCUSS Qs (RED), TAKE HOME MESSAGE (ORANGE)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

How many contraception methods did you name?

Why are there so many different types of contraception?

Which methods protect against HIV/STIs?

TAKE HOME SRHR MESSAGE

The more choices you have with contraception, the safer you are.

Find the right methods for you, and use them correctly and consistently every time you have sex

Drill 2: Dribbling

“Multiple Protection”

(Topic- CONTRACEPTION)

ORGANISATION

1. Set up a series of gates (black cones)

2. Form two teams of two players each (pairs)

STEP 1: INTRODUCE FOOTBALL DRILL AND TOPIC

1. Each player in the pair makes one pass at a time, using the cone to “kick” the ball

2. Aim is to pass the ball through each gate

3. Count how many passes it takes each pair to pass through all the gates

4. The pair who takes the fewest passes, wins!

STEP 2: COACH THE FOOTBALL DRILL (GREEN)

STEP 3: DEBRIEF COACHING POINTS

INTRODUCE SRHR REPRESENTATION

1. Each gate = different method of contraception

2. Going through gate = safe sex if you call out method

3. Missing the gate = unprotected sex or not using the contraception correctly anD consistently

4. You cannot repeat a method during your play

5. Bonus point if you mention a method not yet said!

STEP 4: PLAY AGAIN, ADD THE SRHR MESSAGE

STEP 5: RECAP FOOTBALL, SRHR REPRESENTATION

DISCUSS Qs (RED), TAKE HOME MESSAGE (ORANGE)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

How many contraception methods did you name?

Why are there so many different types of contraception?

Which methods protect against HIV/STIs?

TAKE HOME SRHR MESSAGE

Use condoms and other contraception every time you have sex to prevent HIV, STIs and unintended pregnancy

Drill 3: DRIBBLING

‘Act Fast’

(Topic- Emergency Contraception)

ORGANISATION

1. Mark a goal with one goalkeeper

2. Set one cone five “steps” from goal and another cone ten “steps” from goal

3. Form two teams

STEP 1: INTRODUCE FOOTBALL DRILL AND TOPIC

1. For each shot, the goalkeeper (yellow) does not move

2. An attacker uses a cone to shoot (push) the ball from a minimum of ten “steps” from goal trying to score

3. If a goal scored = one point to the attackers. If no goal = one point to defenders

4. If no goal, the goalkeeper remains on the pitch and the attacker changes. If a goal is scored, the attacker remains on the pitch and the goalkeeper changes.

5. The first team to reach five points, wins!

STEP 2: COACH THE FOOTBALL DRILL (GREEN)

1. Add a defender in front of the goal, five “Steps” away

2. defender can move to defend each shot once the ball moves

STEP 3: DEBRIEF COACHING POINTS

INTRODUCE SRHR REPRESENTATION

1. Shooting = unprotected sex

2. Scoring a goal = unwanted pregnancy

3. Defender in play = taking the emergency pill within 72 hours!

4. Defender stopping goal = emergency pill working

STEP 4: PLAY AGAIN, ADD THE SRHR MESSAGE

STEP 5: RECAP FOOTBALL, SRHR REPRESENTATION

DISCUSS Qs (RED), TAKE HOME MESSAGE (ORANGE)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Did the e-pills in the game always work?

Where can you get e-pills?

When must you take e-pills?

TAKE HOME SRHR MESSAGE

E-pills are for emergency use only and must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

Use other methods of contraception every time you have sex.

Drill 4: Defending

‘NO’

(Topic- Communication)

ORGANISATION

1. Mark one goal, no goalkeeper

2. Set one cone five “steps” from goal and another cone ten “steps” from goal

STEP 3: DEBRIEF COACHING POINTS

INTRODUCE SRHR REPRESENTATION

1. Shooting = something sexual the defender is being pressured into doing, eg having sex, not using a condom

2. Defender stopping goal = saying NO to the pressure

3. Goal scored = not able to say no

4. After each shot, the defender must give an example of something people pressure others to do

5. During the defence, the defender should shout NO!

STEP 4: PLAY AGAIN, ADD THE SRHR MESSAGE

STEP 5: RECAP FOOTBALL, SRHR REPRESENTATION

DISCUSS Qs (RED), TAKE HOME MESSAGE (ORANGE)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

What kinds of things are people pressured into doing sexually?

Whose fault is it if you are pressured into something sexual?

TAKE HOME SRHR MESSAGE

You may be pressured into something sexual you do not want to do.

This pressure is wrong and you have the right to say NO!

Tell someone you trust about the pressure you are facing

4. If more than one cone is knocked over, only the first cone counts and the other cones are

replaced upside down

STEP 2: COACH THE FOOTBALL DRILL (GREEN)

STEP 3: DEBRIEF COACHING POINTS

INTRODUCE SRHR REPRESENTATION

1. Knocking over a black cone = keeping your vulva clean

2. Knocking over a yellow cone = keeping your panties clean and fully dried in fresh air

3. Knocking over a red cone = using a clean product each time you need to change it

4. Not getting all three cones = chance of infection and irritation
