Mbeyu Akida Won Top Scorer Award for the 2016 COTIF Women Tournament in Spain
Esse Mbeyu Akida joined Moving The Goalposts in 2002 when she was only eight years. She was among the six players who joined the organization during its inception. She has been an active player who represented the organization in various tournament within and outside Kilifi and Kwale Counties including the Kenya Premier League that MTG participated in during the year 2014.
In September 2014, Mbeyu got a scholarship from MTG Pathways Project to join Kenya Methodist University (KEMU). She had given up on football as a career and had decided to work hard to pursue a degree course in Business Management. Later upon joining KEMU she realized that her childhood passion in football could not go away and she was thus drawn to join KEMU football team. She would also visit MTG and join her fellow players during school holidays and sometimes played for other women's football teams within the County when called upon.
Mbeyu's dream was further reawakened when she was selected to join the Kenya National Football team, Harambee Starlets in 2015 due to her outstanding football skills. She has been among the best players for her team that has been participating in National and International tournaments.
Mbeyu was awarded as the top scorer for the just ended 2016 COTIF Women Football Tournament in Valencia, Spain. She scored a total of five (5) goals in four (4) matches during the tournament. She scored three (3) goals in their first match against Benfica Portugal Women which made the Kenya Harambee Starlets win 3-0 against their opponent. The team played their second match against Espanyol and won 3- 1 with Mbeyu scoring two (2) goals for their team. "Iam privileged to have represented my country, Kenya in the COTIF Women tournament. I am very grateful to my team mates and technical bench at large for their joint team work and making me win the golden boot with a tally of five. I would also like to mention Moving The Goalposts Kilifi for nurturing my talent since I joined the organization in 2002 when I was only eight years", said Mbeyu Akida during a telephone conversation.
Moving The Goalposts is very proud of Mbeyu as a role model to other girls in Kilifi County who are playing football. When interviewed, one of her fellow team mate and a goalkeeper in MTG united team, had this to say about Mbeyu. "I am very proud of Mbeyu for winning the top scorer award in Spain. Iam so encouraged and motivated to continue playing football in MTG. Congratulations Mbeyu!! Congratulations Kenya!! Congratulations MTG!!" said Sarah Kitsao
