JOB OPPORTUNITY: PROJECT OFFICER – MALE ENGAGEMENT
Moving The Goalposts is a sport for development organization established in 2002 in Kilifi. The organization uses football to empower girls in the rural and urban areas of the coast region. MTG envisions a more inclusive, just, and peaceful world where girl’s and women’s human rights are realized and protected. It uses a rights-based approach and focuses primarily on sexual and reproductive rights, health, and choice. More than nine thousand girls (aged 9 – 25 years) participate in tournaments and ongoing leagues in Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Tana River counties. MTG leagues are youth-led and managed and include girl advocates that promote healthy sexual choices, financial independence, and female leadership. Girls are also encouraged to take up more leadership roles in their communities.
POSITION PURPOSE
To design and implement gender-transformative male engagement strategies that address root causes of gender-based violence, promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and strengthen the role of boys and men as accountable partners in advancing gender equality and women’s rights.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Project Management
i. Design and deliver structured programmes that engage boys and men on positive masculinities, gender equality, and power dynamics.
ii. Facilitate safe, reflective dialogues that challenge harmful social norms and practices
iii. Integrate male engagement approaches into MTG’s football leagues, community forums, and safe spaces
b. SRHR Education & Behavior Change
I. Develop and deliver male-focused SRHR sessions (consent, healthy relationships, contraception, shared responsibility)
ii. Promote understanding of men’s roles in advancing SRHR rights and choices for all
iii. Address stigma and barriers limiting male participation in SRHR
c. GBV Prevention & Safeguarding
i. Lead community-based GBV prevention initiatives targeting men and boys
ii. Promote accountability, non-violence, and respectful relationships
iii. Strengthen safeguarding awareness among male participants, coaches, and community influencers
d. Male Champions & Community Engagement
i. Identify, train, and mentor male champions (coaches, fathers, youth leaders, local influencers)
ii. Facilitate peer-to-peer engagement targeting men in their social spaces
ii. Support community dialogue platforms that promote shared responsibility in gender equality
e. Partnership & Stakeholder Engagement
i. Represent MTG in local and national forums on male engagement, SRHR, and GBV
ii. Build partnerships with community leaders, government actors, and peer organization’s
iii. Strengthen linkages between male engagement initiatives and existing SRHR/GBV structures
f. Monitoring & Evaluation
i. Track and report on behaviour change outcomes among boys and men
ii. Work with the M&E team to measure:
o.Shifts in attitudes toward gender equality
o.Male participation in SRHR decision-making
o.Reduction in harmful practices and GBV risk factors
iii. Document case studies, lessons learned, and impact stories
g. Reporting
i. Prepare timely and high-quality weekly, monthly, and donor reports
ii. Contribute to programme strategy through evidence-based insights
iii. Support development of communication materials showcasing impact
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
a. Level of education.
Degree in Social Sciences/Project Management/ Development Studies /Gender Studies.
b. Key Competencies
i. 2 years’ experience in a similar position/sector
ii. Strong understanding of gender-transformative approaches and feminist principles
iii. Proven experience in community engagement and behaviour change programming
iii Facilitation skills with diverse groups (youth, men, community leaders)
iv. Knowledge of SRHR, GBV prevention, and safeguarding frameworks
v. Ability to influence attitudes and challenge social norms respectfully
vi. Strong documentation, reporting, and partnership-building skills
c. Other competencies
i. Good facilitation and Communication skills
ii. Networking and Community Engagement skills
iii. Leadership skills
iv. Report writing
v. Time Management skills
vi. Curriculum Development/Content development
vii. Role modelling (communicating behavior change)
