Switching On the Future: How MTG is Powering Change with Sunshine and Girl Power

There was a time when a power blackout at Moving the Goalposts (MTG) meant instant chaos. The office printer would stop mid-page, the fridge would give up on keeping water cold, and someone would inevitably shout, “Who forgot to buy diesel again?” Those were the days when our football dreams were partly powered by fuel fumes and frantic generator restarts.
But things have changed.
Today, MTG runs on something far brighter and cleaner: sunshine. The Green Dreams Solar Project is complete, and we are officially glowing for all the right reasons. What began as a bold idea in a planning meeting has become a shining reality across our campus. Our buildings hum quietly with solar energy, and somewhere, the generator sits in the corner wondering how it got benched.

This project means more than lower electricity bills or reduced carbon emissions. It means energy independence. It means our programs for over 8,000 girls and young women can run smoothly without us worrying about fuel costs. It means every shilling saved can now go toward football boots, menstrual kits, and community sessions instead of diesel barrels. It also means that MTG is walking (and running) its talk on sustainability.
When the first solar panels were lifted into place, the excitement was contagious. Staff and girls gathered to watch, cheering every time another panel found its spot. One staff member joked, “Finally, we can say we’re powered by something more reliable than Kenya Power.” Another added, “Even the sun has joined Team MTG now; that’s what I call a strong partnership.” For us, every panel represented progress, proof that sustainable solutions can be both practical and inspiring.
And because learning never stops at MTG, we paired the installation with a two-day Solar Systems Training. The training room buzzed with curiosity as girls and staff rolled up their sleeves to learn about volts, watts, and how sunlight becomes electricity. There was laughter when someone connected a wire the wrong way, and applause when another successfully powered a light bulb. By the second day, participants were confidently discussing system sizing and solar safety.

One trainee, Amina Kalume, summed it up perfectly: “I have learnt what solar energy is, how to calculate watts, the sizing of solar systems, and how they are connected. I will use this knowledge to ensure that solar system connections in my area are done properly and that people take safety measures seriously before, during, and after installation.”
Facilitator Amani Konde from Udzo Sustainable Limited ensured no one was left behind, turning complex concepts into simple, practical lessons. By the end of the sessions, the theory met reality with a guided walk to see MTG’s own solar connection in action. The pride on everyone’s faces said it all.
The Green Dreams Solar Project is more than an energy transition; it is a story of innovation, community, and empowerment. It proves that when girls learn, communities shine brighter, literally. Our offices are now powered by clean energy, but also by something deeper: the belief that change is possible when people come together for a shared purpose.
We are deeply grateful to our partners, supporters, and friends who helped bring this dream to life. You did not just help install panels; you helped power possibility. Every ray of sunlight now fuels hope, and every spark of learning lights a path forward.
But while the system is up and running, our journey is not over yet. We are still raising funds to fully meet the project’s cost and ensure its long-term sustainability. Each contribution brings us closer to achieving complete energy independence for our programs and facilities. When you give to the Green Dreams Solar Project, you are not just donating you are helping keep the lights on for every girl learning, every match played, and every dream taking shape at MTG.
The generator may have retired, but our commitment to sustainability is only growing stronger. With each sunrise, we are reminded that the future really is bright and it is solar powered.
Together, we are switching on a greener tomorrow, one panel, one player, and one powerful dream at a time.
