At Moving the Goalposts, football is more than a game; it’s a catalyst for change. Our Football Program brings together thousands of girls and young women from marginalised communities to play, connect, and rise as leaders. On the field, they discover their strength. Off the field, they become unstoppable.
Why Football
In a world where girls are often told to shrink, we create safe spaces where they can grow confidently, joyfully, and powerfully. MTG uses community-based girls’ football leagues as entry points for building life skills, knowledge, and networks that empower girls to make informed decisions about their lives.
Our Work
- Over 50,000 girls reached since our inception.
- Over 400 teams are active across Kilifi, Kwale, Mombasa, and Tana River counties in Kenya.
- 100+ trained female coaches and referees.
- A growing network of peer mentors and youth leaders.
How It Works
Community Leagues
We organise inclusive, girl-centred leagues where players are mentored by trained young women coaches, many of whom are former players.
Leadership in Action
Players lead team meetings, referee matches, and organise events, building real-world leadership experience.
Safe Spaces
Our pitch is a safe space, free from judgment, violence, and discrimination, where girls can express themselves and build resilience.
Holistic Development
Through sport, we connect girls to critical services, including educational support, information on sexual and reproductive health, and psychosocial support.
Beyond the Game
Our Football Program is not just about winning matches; it’s about changing the rules of the game for girls. Many of our alumnae have gone on to become coaches, community advocates, educators, and professionals who continue to inspire others.
