An Organization UsingSports For Development

We’re more than just a sports for development organisation; we’re a movement powered by sport, community, and purpose. Founded in 2001 in Kilifi (later expanding into Kwale, Mombasa, and Tana River), Moving the Goalposts (MTG) has ignited joy, confidence, purpose, and change in the lives of over 50,000 girls and young women aged 9–25 along Kenya’s coastal region.
How We Work
MTG employs a sports-first approach to draw girls into positive peer engagement, where they acquire football skills, gain access to scholarships to advance their education, engage in peer learning on sexual and reproductive health and rights, and are upskilled in financial literacy and business skills to support those inclined towards entrepreneurship.

- Girl-Led, Girl-Powered
From coaching games to leading life-skills chats, MTG girls run the show—choosing, mentoring, and leading one another. - Hands-On Learning
Forget passive lessons—our programs are about doing: peer teaching, league management, financial planning, mentoring, and more. - Scale Through Community
What began with fewer than 100 participants has grown to over 5,000 weekly players across 48 league fields in three counties, with a lasting regional impact.

How It All Began
Nestled in Kilifi County on the Kenyan Coast, a groundbreaking initiative took flight under the banner of Moving the Goalposts (MTG). Founded by Sarah Forde and supported by mentors such as the late Bob Munro, the famed founder of the Mathare Youth Sports Association, MTG was born from a powerful belief: football can be a tool for transformation.
From Pitch To Purpose
What began with a small team of about 300 girls rapidly soared to engage 9,000 participants annually through school leagues, community sessions, and workshops. Football became more than a game; it was a lever for confidence, self-expression, and renegotiating social norms.
It was an opportunity for girls in marginalized communities in Kenya’s coastal region to escape harmful social and cultural norms such as parental abuse, early marriage, teen pregnancy and get access to education, sports and explore various career options beyond their current realities.
MTG’s programming evolved to include:
- Reproductive health education
- Life skills mentorship
- Leadership development
- Economic empowerment and vocational training
- Data & STEM workshops, such as coding, football analytics
