MTG Marks Menstrual Hygiene Day Across Kilifi and Tana River, Championing Dignity for Girl
By Mwanakombo Hassan

For many girls, a period begins with silence, uncertainty, and missed opportunities. But with knowledge, dignity, and support, it becomes a reminder of strength, confidence, and resilience. A period should never stand in the way of a girl’s dreams.
Moving The Goalposts (MTG) joined partners, communities, and government stakeholders in marking World Menstrual Hygiene Day across Kilifi and Tana River Counties under the global theme “Together for a Period Friendly World.” The commemorations were held at ACC Grounds in Matanomane, Ganze Sub-County in Kilifi County, and at Garsen School in Tana River County.
In Kilifi County, MTG participated in a joint commemoration alongside partners and the County Department of Health and Sanitation Services. The event brought together girls, parents, and community stakeholders in a shared effort to promote menstrual hygiene awareness and break the stigma surrounding menstruation. Participants were engaged in interactive menstrual hygiene drills where they were taught the importance of maintaining cleanliness during menstruation and guided on proper menstrual hygiene practices, including the safe use and management of menstrual products. Girls also received dignity kits to support their menstrual health and wellbeing, ensuring they can manage their periods safely, confidently, and with dignity.

Speaking during the celebrations, Hon. Clara Chonga emphasized the importance of breaking menstrual stigma and ensuring that every girl and woman has access to menstrual health information, sanitary products, and supportive environments. She called for continued collaboration among stakeholders to address barriers that hinder menstrual health and education, noting that creating a period-friendly world requires collective action from families, schools, healthcare providers, community leaders, and development partners. The event reaffirmed Kilifi County’s commitment to promoting the health, empowerment, and wellbeing of women and girls across the county

In Tana River County, twenty girls drawn from MTG league fields in Kulesa and Reuben Mwewe took part in the Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration held at Garsen School. The girls actively engaged in football drills integrated with menstrual hygiene messaging, helping to build awareness and encourage open, honest conversations around menstrual health and hygiene. They also showcased the Take 5 session, demonstrating confidence, enthusiasm, and active participation throughout the activity. One of our girls, Alexina Pascal, a youth peer provider, led a practical demonstration on the correct use of sanitary pads, including how to properly wear and remove them. The session was highly interactive and informative, equipping the girls with essential knowledge on menstrual hygiene management while strengthening their confidence to manage menstruation safely and with dignity.

Across both counties, the activities created safe and engaging spaces while promoting both sport and menstrual hygiene awareness. MTG reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no girl is left behind because of her period. By combining sport, education, and community engagement, MTG continues to challenge stigma and promote menstrual health as a foundation for dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity.
Together, we can build a world where every girl manages her period safely and without barriers.
