Sarah's first blog
Hey, welcome to our first blog. While others are twittering and whatever else the next craze is/will be we're slowly catching up... but let me tell you this blog will be worth waiting for. I'll be writing weekly (some of us have work to do) to give updates on MTG and in particular on the sanitary pads social enterprise plans.
It won't be a long story... but just to let you know we have linked up with Professor Musaazi - one of the most innovative men on the continent (www.t4tafrica.com). He's based in Kampala, Uganda and has developed a low cost and low tech technology to make sanitary pads out of papyrus grass. 'So what?' you might be asking. Well, girls in many parts of Africa can't afford pads and MTG, with the Prof, is looking into ways to make pads that are affordable for many more girls. We've got a grant from the Ford Foundation to develop the business plan. It's going to be a 'social enterprise' ie have some social goals as well as financial goals and in this we're getting help from NESsT (www.nesst.org). It's all new and exciting - we're heading into unknown territory but MTG likes a challenge and this one is a BIG one. Anyway if we manage to succeed we will have helped reduce one of the many struggles girls in Africa face - menstruation. Think about it.... should becoming a woman be the biggest struggle you face or the reason you drop out of school or the reason you can't play sport or the reason you sleep with someone (to get money to buy pads)? Of course not. That's what we're trying to do something about....
That's enough for now. More next week.
